The National Association of Black Journalists &
the Visual Task Force Present:
July 16 thru 20, 1997 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, The National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) will convene its annual convention for 1997. NABJ `97 will host an estimated 5000 Black journalists in broadcasting & the print media from all across the nation. Participating journalists will attend awards ceremonies, workshops, Plenary Sessions & panel discussions.
Included among these panels, on Friday July 18 from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm will be the forum titled Quest For Significance moderated by Chicago Cartoonist, Tim Jackson (creator of "Things That Make You Go Hmm..." ).
Slated for discussion is role played by African American cartoon artists in the print media & now on the internet. Topics will include successes & difficulties in the field of cartooning, the pros & cons of syndication, the lack of visibility& representation in the 'mainstream" media. The portrayal of African American images in the print media & strategies to increasing awareness about Black cartoonists both to the general public & the Black press that could be utilizing the talent.

Greg Harris, who's cartoons are carried in up to 70 papers, Yaounde Olu, of the Chicago & Gary Crusader to speak for Black women editorial cartoonist & Charles Boyce Who's cartoon, "Computoon" is syndicated by the Tribune Media Service.
