1985 - Celebrating over 10 years of Self Empowerment - 1995
Officially founded in January of 1985, Creative License Studio began as a freelance service to make extra money for school in 1979 when I came to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute. As a joke, a business card was designed to look like a drivers' license implying that I had an official license to be creative. When I got my very first apartment (a studio) in Chicago, I attached my 'creative license' card on my mailbox & a neighbor referred to my apartment as the Creative License Studio.
After time, the demand for art made it necessary to expand my work at the expense of attending school.(especially since tuition became greater than financial aid) I officially adopted the name Creative License Studio & aggressively sought out freelance opportunities. I was told by one client that businesses preferred to make payments to other businesses rather than to an individual artist, therefore in 1981, I took on the assumed name of Creative License Studio & started a bank account in that name in order to cash checks made out to the company name. At this point I considered myself official, but it was not until the fall of 1984, when I stopped working full time to devote myself to running my own company.
In 1990 Creative License Studio was incorporated to become Creative License Studio Inc. & a separate tax paying entity. Currently, CLS is used as publisher & distributor of artwork produced by Tim Jackson & the reason why this web site also carries the name.
